When I wrote MENO POSSE, I wanted to say out loud what so many women in my salon chair were quietly surviving. The chin hairs. The rage. The hot flash that arrives right as you are about to walk into a room. Midlife changes everything, and that includes your skin. The foundation that worked at 35 can suddenly look heavy, settle into lines you did not know you had, or slide right off in the middle of a hot flash.
Here is the good news, girlfriend to girlfriend: you do not need to give up makeup or hide behind more of it. You need a few smarter habits. This is what I do for myself and for the women who sit in my chair in Houston every week.
Every woman is different, but the patterns I see again and again are these: skin gets drier and thinner, texture becomes more noticeable, color can look uneven, and hot flashes bring heat and moisture at the worst possible moments. Brows and lashes may get sparser, and lips can lose some of their definition. None of that is a problem to fix. It is information that tells you how to adjust.
If you change only one thing, change your prep. Use a hydrating moisturizer and give it time to sink in. Then apply Camera Ready Primer to smooth texture and give your base something to grip. On days you know will be hot or stressful, primer is not optional.
Mature skin looks most beautiful when you can still see skin. Choose a creamy formula like Picture Perfect Foundation or a lighter BB Cream, and apply a small amount with a damp sponge, starting at the center of the face. Blend outward and stop early. Spot-conceal where you need it instead of building coverage everywhere.
Re-check your shade, too. Skin tone can shift with age and hormones. If your old shade suddenly looks gray or orange, use our Shade Finder to check your undertone and depth again.
Powder is where most midlife makeup goes wrong. Too much settles into lines and makes skin look dry. Press a small amount of JA Hi-Def Loose Powder only on the sides of the nose, the chin and the center of the forehead. Keep it off the outer eye area and the cheekbones.
Blush is the fastest way to look rested. Place Bare Skin blush slightly higher than you used to, on the tops of the cheeks and blended toward the temples. That small shift creates a lifted look. If you contour, use a soft hand with Beauty Stix just under the cheekbone, and blend upward.
Lids can become crepey, so prime them and lean on matte shades in the crease. A satin or soft shimmer on the center of the lid catches light without highlighting texture. The Nude Ambition palette gives you both. Add Black Longwear Mascara to the top lashes, focusing on the roots for lift. If your lower lashes are sparse, skip mascara there for a fresher look.
Thinning brows can make a face look tired. Fill them softly with hair-like strokes, keeping the front lightest, then set them with Brow Fixx Tint & Shaper. It is the closest thing to an instant facelift in your makeup bag.
Lips can lose their edge over time, which makes lipstick look like it is feathering. Line first with a pencil like JA Lip Pencil in Rosewood, then fill. Choose comfortable formulas and balm your lips before you start. If you love a matte, apply Liquid Velvet Lipstick in one thin coat over a well-moisturized lip.
You cannot stop a hot flash, but you can make sure your makeup survives it. Thin layers help, because there is less product to break down. Finish every look with Setting Spray. When a flash passes, blot with a tissue or blotting paper before adding anything. Re-powdering on top of moisture is what makes makeup look heavy by afternoon.
Some mornings you do not have the patience for a full face, and that is fine. Here is my five-minute version: moisturizer, a pea-sized amount of primer, BB Cream pressed in with your fingers, a tap of concealer where you need it, blush high on the cheeks, brows filled and set, one coat of mascara and a lip color you love. Mist with setting spray on the way out the door. You will look rested, not done.
Small changes fix all of these. The goal is skin that looks like skin, with color in the places that bring your face to life.
Some days your skin will behave and some days it will not. Midlife is not a before-and-after story; it is a season. Keep the routine simple, keep your products working for you, and laugh about the rest with your Posse.
MENO POSSE is about refusing to white-knuckle midlife alone. Makeup is part of that for a lot of us. Not to hide, but to feel like ourselves on the days our bodies are being unpredictable. Every product mentioned here is part of the Janelle Alexis collection, curated and designed by me, cruelty-free and made in the USA, and chosen to look good on real skin at every age.
