If I had a dollar for every woman who sat in my chair wearing the wrong foundation shade, I could retire to a beach. It is not your fault. Store lighting is unforgiving, shade names are confusing, and skin changes with the seasons and with age. In more than twenty years behind the chair in Houston, I have learned that finding your shade comes down to two things: undertone and depth. Once you know both, everything else gets easy.
Your undertone is the subtle color beneath the surface of your skin. It does not change with a tan. There are three main undertones:
Check in natural daylight, not under bathroom bulbs. If you are still unsure, think about how your skin behaves in the sun. Skin that burns easily often leans cool; skin that tans easily often leans warm. That is why our Shade Finder starts with undertone.
Depth is how light or deep your skin is. Most women know roughly where they fall: fair, light, medium, tan or deep. Within each range, small steps make a big difference, so test more than one shade.
Choose three shades that you think are close. Swipe a small stripe of each along your jawline, from the cheek down onto the neck. Step into daylight and look in a mirror from arm's length. The right shade disappears. If one looks like a stripe, it is wrong, no matter how close it looked in the bottle.
Formulas matter too. Picture Perfect Foundation is a creamy liquid; our foundation collection includes the full Flawless Finish range; and BB Cream gives sheerer, more forgiving coverage if you are between shades.
Concealer: to cover spots, match your foundation exactly. Under the eyes, choose about one shade lighter to brighten. Browse our concealers to find both.
Powder: a powder that matches or is just lighter than your foundation keeps your shade true. JA Hi-Def Loose Powder is designed to set without adding color, and our powders include tinted options if you like extra coverage.
Contour and blush: contour should be about two shades deeper than your skin with a neutral or cool undertone so it reads as shadow. Blush should mimic your natural flush; Bare Skin is a soft everyday choice.
Many women need a slightly different shade in summer and winter, and skin can shift with age and hormones. Mixing two shades is a pro trick: keep your lighter and deeper match and blend them on the back of your hand when you are between. If your trusty shade suddenly looks gray or heavy, it is time to re-check. My post on foundation for mature skin goes deeper on this.
The right shade only helps if it stays put. Start with Camera Ready Primer, apply thin layers, press powder where you shine and finish with Setting Spray. For more, read my sweat-proof glam guide.
Bathroom bulbs, store spotlights and phone screens all shift color. The most reliable light for choosing a shade is indirect daylight from a window. If you do your makeup at a vanity, check it by the window before you leave the house. A shade that looks perfect under warm bulbs can look orange in daylight, and one that looks perfect under cool light can look gray.
Flash can make the wrong shade obvious. If your face looks lighter than your neck in photos, your foundation may be too light, or you may be using too much powder. Try a test photo with flash before an event so there are no surprises.
"Deep skin is always warm." Not true. Every depth comes in cool, warm and neutral undertones. "Pink foundation hides redness." Usually the opposite: a slightly more neutral or golden shade calms redness better. "You only have one shade for life." Most women shift at least a little with the seasons and over the years, so re-check whenever your foundation starts to look off.
